What do we know about Jane Ward Lawrence? I think that with 2 Clarissa’s there has been confusion. This is my proposal, if you follow the dates it makes more sense: Jane’s Grandfather: John Lawrence’s original family was from US, born 1766 Jane’s Grandmother: Clarissa Ward, born in 1770’s possibly In 1819, after Simcoe County opened up a dozen families settled on the Penetanguishene Rd (Con 1) in Oro and Vespra - including the John Lawrence. John Lawrence settled on the Vespra side, Con 1, Lot 5. The first house built north of Kempenfeldt was John Lawrence's in 1819. John was still going strong according to the 1861 census: He lived in Vespra, Simcoe County, was 95 years old and a widow. The census stated he was Weslyan Methodist and was born in the United States about 1766. John and Clarissa had at least one child: Jane’s father John Duffield Lawrence born 1809 Simcoe, Jane’s mother - 1st wife married to native woman Mary, died before 1836. There were many tribes and tribes moving into the area with the Selkirk group that it is near impossible to know which one Mary came from. Also quite often women had a native name and an English name. (she is buried with the family in the Lawrence Cemetery) I propose Mary is Jane’s mother thereby making Jane metis (apparently my grandmother had darker skin, this has been known to happen in families). Jane Ward Lawrence Born 31 Mar 1828 in Holland Landing York Co., Upper Canada Death Living No record of baptism 2nd Wife Clarissa Armstrong Marriages at St. James Cathedral, Toronto Aug. 1836 - 1841 Anglican Marriages Performed by H.J. Grasett, Asst. Min. 26 Jan, 1837, by license, John LAWRENCE, of the township of Vespra, bachelor, and Clarissa ARMSTRONG, of the same place, widow. Witnesses, Jane BEATTY, William LARKIN. In 1844 John Duffield Lawrence and Clarissa Armstrong – or John Lawrence and Clarissa Ward gave 2 acres of their land for a church to be built. It was never built and became (as it was before) Lawrence Cemetery. More about Jane: Jane met her husband William Demeline as he lived across Penetanguishene on the Oro side. They were married in 1852. (He came to Canada from England in 1843 from Yorkshire. His sister Hannah had come before him and had married Mr. Caldwell.) Census In 1891, Jane was in Oro Twp, Simcoe Co., Ontario Con 12 Lot 17 W1/2 The only ones left on the farm were the Widowed mother Jane, age 63, bachelor son Thomas, age 27, and Mary age 22. Thomas and Mary were members of the Salvation Army. All three could read and write. Jane died 17 Jan 1904 , age 75, at Crown Hill. She was buried in Crown Hill, Simcoe County, Ontario – an English stronghold (her husband’s family was buried here) or St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery (Coulson's Hill Anglican Cemetery) Con 11 Lot 15, West Gwillimbury Twp, Simcoe, up on Yonge St. I’m fuzzy on that point. Jane is my gr gr grandmother. Please contact Lisa.

Stephen Brown - Seeking info on Stephen Brown (b. Maine) and Margaret Craik m. 1844 in Brock. Daughter Agnes Eliza Brown was born 19 Nov 1846 in Simcoe. By 1851 Margaret and Agnes were living with the Dundass family (Elizabeth Dundass was a Craik). Stephen is not mentioned. Margaret lists her occupation as milliner. Sometime after 1851 Agnes Eliza emigrated to Iowa and lived with the John Christie Family (Agnes Christie was a Craik). All roads point to Margaret being the daughter of James Craik and Agnes Thomson and the sister of Robert Craik MPP in 1860 and Elizabeth Dundass and Agnes Christie. But Craik genealogists dispute this. Any info would be appreciated. Please contact Catherine.

I am researching Andrew Harkin & Bridget Madden & their children Neil (1828-1902), Ann (1829-1897), Edward (b c.1830) (?), Martin (1831-1907) & Anthony (1845-1876). This family left Ireland on the ship the Wolfville in the spring of 1847, and landed at Quebec 10 June. Bridget and several of her children died during the passage or at Grosse Isle. The surviving members of the family settled at Sunnidale, Collingwood & at Nottawassaga . They are also associated with settlement at New Lowell. Neil married Mary Agnes Dunn (1833-1895), Ann m Patrick O`Malley (1827-1897), Martin m Mary McCormick (1842-1914). There were Maddens living in the area when the Harkins arrived in the 1840s. Trying to find a connection to a Robert George SUMMERS/SOMERS, born circa 1812. From census info he was born in America and was a British Canada Subject. His probable father was a Charles SUMMERS born circa 1782 and known to be a mason with South West England connections. Given the similarity to William and James SUMMERS/SOMERS does anyone have any indication of these earlier relatives in Simcoe/Ontario. Please contact Martin.

In the 1881 Simcoe County census there is a listing for a James Greenshields age 67, and a daughter Mary Ann age 11 living with him. It states that he is married but his wife’s name is not listed as part of the household. I believe that Mary Ann was my Great Grandmother. There is also a possibility that Mr. Greenshields was buried in St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery, East Oro. Only a picture of the cemetery is online but not the individually named stones as in Esson Church Cemetery Oro/Medonte where my parents are buried. Could you give me any suggestions as to where to start looking for more information for Mr. Greenshields and what his wife’s name would have been? I am retiring soon and will have more time to look into finding some information on my Great Grandmother whose birth name was Russell. She was adopted in 1870 or 1871 by a Mr. & Mrs. Greenshields as I understand it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Please contact Fern.

Would anyone know where I can find cemetery (Sexton) records for St. Mary's in Barrie? I am not looking for transcriptions as most of the earliest stones are gone or illegible. My GG Grandfather died in the mid 1860's and was a parishioner at St. Mary's. He would have been buried at the original St. Mary's Cemetery just prior to the present St. Mary's Cemetery (1867). I have called the cemetery and although they sounded genuinely interested they informed me that no info is available for that time period. No headstone - No record. I know sometimes we are overzealous with our pursuits and expectations of finding info about our ancestors, however I also can't see how a large and organized cemetery can operate not knowing who is buried where on some sort of a site plan. Any thoughts or answers are welcome. Please contact Richard.

I am looking for any existing photographs of the old blacksmith shop located in Vasey, Ontario. It would have been torn down, I think, in the early 1960's. I would also appreciate any photos of the Vasey General store operated by Ivan Vasey until 1945, when it was taken over by my father, Carson BROWN. He built a new general store beside the existing one on the southeast side of Vasey Rd. and Concession 4 approximately 1955-56. The old store was torn down in 1956. In addition, if there are existing photos of the Vasey Methodist church (now gone), I would appreciate this as well. I am creating a photo collage for my father (suffering from Alzheimers) who was born and raised (as was I) in Vasey and Vasey is his most vivid memory. Please contact Rick and Elaine.

I am looking for info about an escape from Huronia Regional Centre (probably had another name at the time) that occured January 9, 1932. The name of the escapee was William Hannant. If someone can supply me with the original name of this institution or any idea where I might be able to find out about this incident I would appreciate hearing from you. Please contact Cindy.
